The Kershaw DuraLock is the brand's ambidextrous crossbar lock, a steel bar that slides across the blade tang to lock it open and pulls back to close. When Benchmade's AXIS lock patent expired, the market followed quickly, and Kershaw introduced its own take in 2023. It is simple, strong, truly ambidextrous, and it now runs across a large share of the full line of Kershaw knives.
DuraLock does not reinvent anything; it is Kershaw's version of a proven design, done well. The steel crossbar locks up solid with no blade play. It is smooth to operate and works the same for either hand, with reversible clips on most models. Unlike a liner lock, you never put your fingers in the blade path to close it.
Kershaw launched DuraLock with four models in 2023. The Iridium, with aluminum handles and a D2 blade on ball bearings, became the breakout hit. The Heist uses a glass filled nylon handle and thumb studs, the Covalent adds a flipper, and the Monitor is a compact, blacked out take on the Covalent. All four run D2.
DuraLock has since moved upmarket. The USA made Bel Air and Bel Air XL pair the lock with CPM MagnaCut, the Bareknuckle DuraLock brings MagnaCut and a 3.5 inch blade to the Bareknuckle platform, and the new Continental adds a 3.35 inch MagnaCut blade in FDE aluminum. Our knife steel guide explains what MagnaCut brings.
The latest releases fill in every size and price. The USA made Bonneville runs 14C28N at 2.3 ounces, and the Airspace gets down to 1.7 ounces. The Celestion and Proximal pair D2 with G-10, the Beskar brings a D2 trailing point on bearings, and the Duster and Maneuver keep the price low in 8Cr13MoV. The Mini Iridium shrinks the original to a 3 inch blade.
