The Lansky Hard Arkansas Bench Stone is a 6 inch by 2 inch natural novaculite finishing stone built for the last step of a sharpening session. Hard Arkansas is quarried stone, not a synthetic abrasive, and its fine, dense structure polishes an edge rather than hogging off steel. Use it whenever you want an exceptionally fine, refined edge on pocket knives, hunting knives, and kitchen blades.
Arkansas stones sit at the finishing end of a progression. Set the bevel and raise a burr on a coarser stone first, such as a diamond plate or a soft Arkansas, then move to the hard Arkansas to refine the scratch pattern and polish the apex. Because the stone cuts slowly and wears very little, it rewards light pressure and a consistent angle, and it holds its shape for years of use. Arkansas stones are traditionally used with a few drops of honing oil to float away the swarf and keep the surface from loading up. Wipe the stone clean after each session.
The stone is set in a forest green housing with a black rubberized non slip base, so it stays put on a bench or kitchen counter while you work. Its 6 inch length gives enough stroke for most folders and fixed blades, and the compact size makes it easy to store with the rest of your sharpening gear.
Pair it with the rest of our Lansky sharpeners, step down from a coarser grit in our sharpening stones, and finish on a leather strop. New to freehand sharpening? Our knife sharpening guide covers angles, grit progression, and how to hold a consistent bevel on a benchstone.
