The Medford UDT-1 is a compact fixed blade from Medford Knife & Tool, made in Phoenix, Arizona. Greg Medford designed it for a family member in the Naval Special Warfare community, and the first run went to a graduating class at Coronado. Those knives have since served around the world.
The name nods to the Navy's Underwater Demolition Teams, the frogmen who came before today's SEALs. Medford built the UDT-1 around their practical needs: a capable blade in a compact package that takes up as little real estate as possible when mounted on a kit. At about 4 ounces, it rides on a plate carrier, belt, or pack without getting in the way, which makes it a natural tactical knife and backup blade.
The Pro Series UDT-1 runs a 3.5 inch tumbled CPM 20CV blade on 0.150 inch stock, about 7.5 inches overall, with G-10 scales and a matching Kydex sheath in black, coyote, or OD green. 20CV is a high wear resistance stainless that holds up to salt and moisture, compared in our knife steel guide. The same design in 1095 with a leather sheath is the 1881 Knifeworks UDT. Other 20CV Medford fixed blades include the Micro Tanto, Mizuchi, and The Deep.
