The Medford Luke Airman is a compact survival knife for pilots and aviators, built by Medford Knife & Tool in Phoenix, Arizona. It is sized for the cramped quarters of a cockpit while still handling emergency survival work, in a smaller package than a traditional military field or fighting knife.
The knife honors Lt. Frank Luke Jr., the Phoenix born World War I pilot known as the Arizona Balloon Buster. Luke was credited with 18 victories, 14 of them observation balloons, and received the Medal of Honor posthumously for his final mission. Medford built the Luke Airman as a hometown tribute: a dependable fixed blade for flight crews and anyone who wants a capable survival knife that doesn't take up much room.
The Pro Series Luke Airman runs a 4.9 inch tumbled CPM 3V blade on 0.150 inch stock, 9.8 inches overall, with G-10 scales and a Kydex sheath in black or OD green. CPM 3V is a tough tool steel, compared in our knife steel guide. The 1881 Knifeworks Luke Airman offers the same pattern in 1095 with a leather sheath. For a heavier Medford survival knife, look at the AIO-2.
